Education (F1701)

Build better schools.

Year 1: Travel and study curriculum from different school systems in India and outside. Meet and take inputs from different stakeholders in education (teachers, students, parents, educationists etc). This research feeds into your overall research on school education. Design a plan for scalable interventions in existing schools.

Year 2: Implement the interventions in partner schools, create new partnerships and new interventions relevant to the school’s environment. Analyze the impact of the interventions. The work from Year 1 continues into Year 2 as well, providing regular inputs and feedback.

Year 3: Strengthen the interventions and the existing study by continuous evaluation and feedback from mentors/stakeholders. Improve upon the work done over the first two years and build a framework for setting up a dream school.

Intended Career: Educationist OR Education-entrepreneur

Start your own school or join a like-minded team to start one (VIF will support the fellow in raising funds and developing partnerships for the dream school). Associate with VIF to establish an all-new system of education (imagine a new board) and transform India.

Education (F1702)

Design educational thought.

Year 1: Research different philosophies of education and map them to existing practices in education. As a scholarly work, look at different educational systems, the purpose of education, contemporary educational needs etc. Write regular articles and policy briefs on the subject.

Year 2: Continue the work from first year and develop more specific research interests. Prepare for an advanced degree in the field (Masters/MPhil/PhD), complete the academic and logistic requirements for an admission.

Year 3: Move to one of the top universities in the world to study education as a researcher. (VIF helps in identifying and connecting to appropriate universities/professors for pursuing an advanced degree).

Intended Career: Academician OR Educationist

Complete a PhD in education and work on improving the education system in the country. As an academician, teach the next generation of teachers/scholars/educationists. As an educationist/ mentor, help your peers and juniors in pursuing their dream of improving education in India.

History (F1703)

Study India of the first millennium.

Year 1 and 2: Study India’s ancient history (1st millennium) with regards to political conquests, governance, institutions, social and economic systems etc. Visit historic sites for first-hand exposure to relevant points in history. Converge the study in the form of a book and a series of articles. Prepare for an advanced degree in the field (Masters/MPhil/PhD), complete the academic and logistic requirements for admission.

Year 3: Move to one of the top universities in the world for an academic study in the field (VIF helps in identifying and connecting to appropriate universities/professors for pursuing an advanced degree).

Intended Career: Academician

Complete a PhD in history (and/or allied subjects). As an academician, teach the next generation of students and continue pioneering work on Indian history.

Political Reforms (F1704)

Bring political reforms.

Year 1 and 2: Work with Dr Jayaprakash Narayan on political reforms. Study the evolution of democracy and political reforms in India. Review the vast literature on political reforms and write articles/policy briefs. Assist Dr. Jayaprakash Narayan in writing a book on political reforms agenda for India. Continue the work from year 1 and take the book to a published status.

Year 3: Advocate for political reforms through writing, organizing seminars/conferences for key stakeholders, activism and more OR Move to one of the top universities in the world for an academic study in the field (VIF helps in identifying and connecting to appropriate universities/professors for pursuing an advanced degree).

Intended Career: Political Activist OR Academician

Carry forward the work on political reforms through activism or by further developing and professing political thought through academia.

Location: Hyderabad

Strategic and Foreign Studies (F1705)

Strengthen India globally.

Year 1: Analyze current and strategic affairs in light of India’s foreign relations. Write regular articles, policy briefs and scholarly papers on foreign policy. Prepare for book-writing in the later part of the fellowship.

Year 2: Identify specific topics of interest within foreign affairs and get more rigorous in their study. Provide policy inputs to government and political leaders working on foreign policy. Prepare for book-writing.

Year 3: Continue the work from first two years and converge thoughts in the form of a book on strategic agenda for India.

Intended Careers: Academician OR Bureaucrat (Indian Foreign Service) OR Political Leader

Pursue an advanced degree (Masters/PhD) in international relations and become an academician, OR, prepare for the civil services and become a diplomat to work within the system, OR, become a political leader/thinker and help in advancing India’s interest globally.

Strategic and Foreign Relations (F1706)

Build a global network.

Year 1, 2 and 3: Establish a Global Young Achiever’s Network (GYAN) with the help of VIF. GYAN is conceived to be a network of emerging young leaders from different countries. GYAN allows citizen-to-citizen multilateral engagement through networking, ideation and collaboration.

Design and organize one GYAN summit every year through VIF and relevant partners. Identify and network with emerging young leaders in countries of key importance for India and bring them closer to India. Follow up with these individuals before and after summit to create a network of pro-India leaders in the coming decades.

Intended Careers: Bureaucrat (Indian Foreign Service) OR Political Leader

Prepare for the civil services and become a diplomat to work within the system, OR, become a political leader/thinker and help in advancing India’s interest globally.

Executive Assistance to Elected Representatives (F1707)

Improve a constituency.

Year 1: Work with an elected representative to drive high-impact projects in the constituency. Establish/improve mechanisms of service delivery, grievance redressal and the elected leader’s engagement with the constituents. Take support from others at VIF in identifying best practices in governance and piloting them in the constituency.

Year 2: It’s the campaign year! Depending on which leader you are selected to work with, continue and improve on the work from Year 1, OR, assist them in the political campaign for the next elections.

Year 3: Eventually move to your own constituency and initiate socio-political work. All this while, keep developing thoughts on political systems, reforms, and governance in India.

Intended Career: Political Consulting OR Public Life

Help elected representatives, political parties, and governments as a consultant OR build a political base, join a political party and eventually contest elections in your home constituency (VIF will support in creating a good governance framework for constituencies).

Good Governance (F1708)

Replicate best practices.

Year 1: Work with VIF in partnership with Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), Government of India to identify and scale up best practices in governance. The best practices will typically be from the sectors such as e-governance, service delivery, and citizen engagement.

Year 2: Partner with interested government authorities such as bureaucrats (DARPG and VIF help in building the partnerships) to implement the identified practices in their jurisdiction.

Year 3: Develop a local team of both full-time and part-time people to sustain and improve the interventions, serving as a continuous support system to the partner agency.

Intended Career: Bureaucracy OR Development Consultant OR Development Activist OR Public Life

Prepare for civil services to drive change from within the system, OR, become a consultant and help others in delivering good governance, OR, setup/work in a non-profit organization for developmental work.

Location: Delhi + Travel

Fellowship is a full-time program for three years. It has three components:

  1. Work (WR): Activities directly related to the project. This will take up ~67% (two-third) of the time
  2. Training (TR): Workshops and training programs organized by VIF. This takes ~16.5% (one-sixth) of the time
  3. Personal Profile (PR): Preparing for a career post the fellowship. This takes ~16.5% (one-sixth) of the time

The time distribution has been prepared considering a 56-hour week (including all components). Each component will be mentored.

Some projects mention that the location is yet to be declared. The location will be provided to the shortlisted applicants for those projects.
